The article examines the representation of Eastern realities in Leo Tolstoy’s novella Hadji Murat. Based on the text of the work, the study analyzes the everyday life, religion, culture, and moral code of the Caucasian mountaineers, as well as their confrontation with the imperial system. Particular attention is paid to Tolstoy’s combination of documentary accuracy and artistic imagination in creating the image of a man of honor and will. Hadji Murat embodies the type of Eastern hero for whom loyalty and dignity stand above personal gain. Through this character, Tolstoy reveals the dramatic clash between two worlds — the Caucasian and the Russian, the spiritual and the authoritarian.
