The paper examines the socio-psychological portrayal of Evdokia (Dunya) in V. Ya. Shishkov’s short story “Kralya” (1913). It focuses on the meaning of the title, the heroine’s speech, her dependence on social circumstances, Doctor Sher’s perspective, and the function of the ending. Close reading and structural-poetic analysis reveal how an initial emphasis on physical attractiveness gradually gives way to a more complex understanding of the protagonist’s experience. Special attention is paid to the contrast between Dunya’s attempts to preserve personal dignity and the coercion exercised by male figures. The story’s delayed disclosure of decisive circumstances prompts readers to reconsider earlier judgments. It is argued that the female character’s psychological depth emerges from the interplay of dialogue, competing viewpoints, and the moral conflict between sympathy and a genuine willingness to understand another person.
